Being Portuguese and living with a British partner has added a beautiful blend of traditions to our holiday season, making Christmas a time that feels unique and memorable. In Portugal, Christmas Eve is the star of the season. Families gather for a grand dinner, often featuring bacalhau (salted cod) as the centrepiece, followed by sweet treats like rabanadas and bolo rei. After dinner, presents are opened at midnight, surrounded by warmth, laughter, and loved ones. And of course, we still keep the tradition of a festive lunch on Christmas Day — a nod to civilized tradition!

In the UK, Christmas Day takes centre stage. The traditional lunch — complete with turkey, stuffing, all the trimmings, and Christmas pudding — is the highlight.

Since we celebrate in the UK, my partner and I have found a way to honour both traditions. On Christmas Eve, we enjoy a cosy, Portuguese-inspired dinner together and open our gifts at midnight. Then, on Christmas Day, we host a festive lunch for family — filled with love, laughter, and presence.

From planning the menu to hanging garlands, lighting candles, and choosing the perfect tree, getting the home Christmas-ready fills me with joy. It’s about more than aesthetics; it’s about creating a warm, inviting space where memories are made. Every detail counts — from setting the table with sparkling glasses and festive crackers to placing those finishing touches that make the season magical.

The Build-Up: Christmas Films and Cozy Evenings

One of the highlights of December is the lead-up to Christmas. Every year, my partner and I settle in for our favourite festive films — a tradition that never fails to lift our spirits. From the classic A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim to feel-good favourites like The Holiday, Last Christmas, Love Actually, and the timeless It’s a Wonderful Life, our selection spans all moods and memories. And yes, Die Hard 1 and 2 definitely count as Christmas films in our house!

There’s something magical about curling up on the couch with a hot drink, letting the stories wash over you, and feeling the quiet excitement of the season. These small rituals are what make Christmas feel truly special.

The Reality: A Time for Kindness and Compassion

Christmas isn’t joyful for everyone. Loneliness, illness, financial struggles, or mental health challenges can make this time of year difficult. And some people simply don’t enjoy the holiday season — and that’s okay too. Being mindful and respectful of others’ boundaries is part of the spirit of the season.

But Christmas is also a perfect opportunity to show kindness. A cup of tea with an elderly neighbour, a message to a friend who’s having a tough time, or a small act of generosity can make a huge difference. These gestures create warmth and connection that ripple far beyond the day itself.

Let’s Spread the Cheer Together

For me, Christmas is about connection — celebrating with loved ones while also being mindful of those who may need a little extra care. From decorating the house to hosting festive meals, every moment is an opportunity to create memories that last a lifetime.
