Being Portuguese and living with a British partner has added an exciting blend of traditions to our celebrations, making our Christmases unique and memorable. In Portugal, Christmas Eve is the star of the season (though we still gather the family for lunch on Christmas Day—civilized traditions must prevail, after all!). Families gather for a grand dinner, often featuring bacalhau (salted codfish) as the centrepiece, followed by sweet treats like rabanadas and bolo rei. After dinner, we open presents at midnight, surrounded by the warmth and laughter of loved ones.

In the UK, Christmas Day takes centre stage, with the traditional lunch—complete with turkey, stuffing, all the trimmings and Christmas pudding—being the highlight.

Since we split our celebrations between the two countries, my partner and I have come up with our own way to honour both traditions when we’re in the UK.

On Christmas Eve, we enjoy a cozy dinner together, a nod to my Portuguese roots, and open our gifts at midnight. Then, on Christmas Day, we go all out hosting a festive lunch for family. It’s a day filled with love, good food, and the perfect excuse to bring out my carefully chosen decorations—because yes, decorating the house is one of my favourite parts of the season!

From planning the meal to hanging garlands and placing candles, getting the house Christmas-ready fills me with joy. It’s about more than just aesthetics—it’s creating an inviting space where memories are made. Whether it’s the excitement of choosing the perfect tree or setting the table with sparkling glasses and festive crackers, every detail counts.

The Build-Up: Christmas Films and Cozy Evenings

One of my favourite parts of December is the lead-up to Christmas Day. My partner and I have an annual tradition of watching our favourite Christmas films—a list that never fails to get us in the holiday spirit. From the classic black-and-white A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim (our favourite Scrooge) to the action-packed Die Hard 1 and 2 (yes, they are Christmas films), feel-good films like The Holiday, Last Christmas, Love Actually, and of course, the timeless It’s a Wonderful Life (available on Amazon Prime Video).

There’s something magical about curling up on the couch, hot chocolate in hand, and letting the festive stories wash over us. It’s these small traditions that make the season feel so special.

The Reality: A Time for Kindness and Compassion
While Christmas is often called “the season to be jolly,” it’s important to acknowledge that it’s not a joyful time for everyone. Many people struggle during the festive season—whether due to loneliness, illness, financial hardship, or mental health challenges that feel magnified at this time of year. Some individuals simply don’t like Christmas, and that’s okay too. It’s important to respect their boundaries and offer understanding.

But Christmas is also an opportunity to reach out and make a difference. Think about your elderly neighbour who might be spending the holidays alone—could you invite them over for a cup of tea and a chat? Or your friend who hasn’t been feeling well—how about checking in to let them know you care? Small gestures of kindness can create a ripple effect of warmth and support.

Let’s Spread the Cheer Together
For me, Christmas is about connection—both with loved ones and with those who need an extra dose of kindness. From decorating the house to hosting family meals, every moment is a chance to create lasting memories.

I’d love to know—what are your favourite Christmas traditions? And which films are must-watches on your list? Let me know in the comments.
